Local Anesthesiologist Makes National Presentation

A paper, titled Stolen Prescription Drug Reports – Part II: Still Cause for Alarm, submitted by William J. Granger, M.D., and coauthor Roger Dilly, Marion Police Department, Marion, IN., was presented as a poster presentation at the American Academy of Pain Management (AAPM) meeting in Las Vegas and the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) annual meeting in San Diego.

The paper dealt with the issue of stolen prescription medications and is the result of a collaborative task force effort between the Marion Police Department and the Grant County Medical Society, of which Granger serves as President.

The presentation was a follow-up to an initial study and poster presentation conducted by the Grant County Medical Society and Marion Police Department in 2008 titled, Reports of Stolen Prescription Medication: A Closer Look.

“Stolen prescription medication is a source of much vexation to both physicians and law enforcement alike,” states Granger. “I appreciate the leadership of the Marion Police Department for tackling this difficult issue.”

The importance of the topic was further validated by the fact the paper was cited in Medscape News, a leading online destination used by physicians, medical students and other healthcare professionals for in-depth clinical information, and Granger was asked to write an editorial on the same subject in PainMedicine News, an independent monthly newspaper for pain management.

“A paper of this magnitude is never the work of one individual,” furthers Granger. “It was a collective effort from previously mentioned organizations as well as Marion Health and Indiana Wesleyan University, and I am grateful for their contributions.”
